Wolff says Mercedes ‘re-inventing’ its F1 team for a new era

Mercedes is trying to re-invent itself following the departure of Lewis Hamilton, according to team principal Toto Wolff, who says it was the right time for both parties to have a new challenge. Hamilton’s first few weeks with Ferrari have seen huge interest around the new partnership, with testing outings in previous machinery in both Fiorano and Barcelona receiving significant attention. Hamilton and Mercedes had become synonymous with each other during a 12-year stint that brought enormous success, but Wolff says the timing was right to refresh the team with a young line-up featuring George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli (pictured with Wolff, above). “It was right for both of us,” Wolff told Sky Sports. “I think when you see Lewis in his first appearances at Ferrari — I mean, this picture in front of Enzo Ferrari’s house is iconic. Lewis with his sense of style…. “And at the same time, us embarking on a different route, trying to re-invent ourselves with a young driver — in addition to George , because he’s not mentioned enough. We have a senior, accomplished driver that has won races, and this new kid coming up. And at the same time Lewis doing something on his own, something new, I think it was a refresh for both of us.” The Mercedes team principal was speaking at the official launch of a new collaboration with Adidas that marks the sportswear giant’s first move into Formula 1.
